Information session on Saturday, February 10th at 9am
Encountering a crisis, experiencing relationship conflicts or feeling overwhelmed by emotions and situations is something we all face from time to time. For some teens, these stressful times, combined with already heightened emotions, can be extremely difficult to manage. In efforts to regulate their emotions, adolescents may turn to destructive behavior such as self-harm, suicide attempts or behavior that risks their safety.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) uses techniques to change these behaviors and thought patterns. In this one and a half hour DBT Skill Information session on February 10th at 9am, parents will be introduced to some of the types of self-destructive behavior and how adolescents use it to manage depression, anxiety, anger, stress, impulsivity and feelings of emptiness.
We will present DBT’s four skills modules:
- Mindfulness skills teach a person how to focus their mind and attention on the here and now.
- Distress Tolerance is centered on accepting the current situation and finding ways to survive and tolerate the moment without engaging in problematic behavior.
- Emotional Regulation skills help to identify and label current emotions, identify obstacles to changing emotions, reduce emotional reactivity, increase positive emotions, and change emotions.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness teaches effective strategies for asking for what you need, saying no and setting limitations, and coping with interpersonal conflict.
