Sharon Williams, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Bates College in Maine, and her graduate degree from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. She has been in practice since 1997. At In Step Sharon has worked with Stepping Stones social skills groups, middle and high school groups, and parent groups, as well as providing individual and family therapy. After a careful and thorough assessment of the child, along with consideration of family, school, and other environmental settings, Sharon approaches therapy holistically and tailors interventions according to what would best suit the child’s needs and create positive change. Some of the methodologies utilized include Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT), Dialectical-Behavioral (DBT), insight-oriented therapy, mindfulness, imagery, and aspects of positive psychology.
Sharon’s professional career has included working with adults, children, adolescents, and families in non-profit, private practice, and hospital settings. Sharon has been a Clinical Social Worker with Dominion Hospital in Falls Church, VA since 2000, working almost exclusively with children, adolescents, and their families in group therapy, family therapy, and parent support group settings. Sharon has always taken a special interest in the developmental stages of children and adolescents, in particular those struggling with anxiety, depression and self-injurious behaviors. During her professional experience, she has developed a passion for working with families, especially providing support to parents to make the goals of positive parenting more accessible and attainable. What Sharon enjoys most about working in the mental health field is being able to observe progress that is made by individuals, families, and groups toward integrating new behaviors that lead to greater harmony both within the family and in the community. In her free time Sharon enjoys yoga, hiking, bicycling, traveling, cooking and baking, and spending time with her family. Sharon is a member of National Association of Social Workers and is certified to supervise clinicians in earning their clinical licensure in Virginia.
