Janene received her Bachelor’s Degree at Brigham Young University and her Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of New Mexico. She moved here recently from Albuquerque New Mexico where she gained extensive experience counseling families, children, and adolescents with the Southwest Family Guidance Center. In addition to her work at In Step, Janene is a school counselor at the Burke School, a public day school for middle school students receiving special education services primarily due to emotional and/or behavioral needs. At the school Janene conducts groups, supports students in transitioning to other schools, and works with a clinical team to support student’s academic and emotional needs. Recently, Fairfax County Public Schools awarded Janene “Most Outstanding New Counselor” of the year. Janene’s expertise in using communications and mediation to enhance social skill development in children and teens through the group process is a particular passion for her and what has attracted her to working at In Step. Janene is currently in the process of accumulating additional supervised hours towards her LPC with In Step’s Mary Shuffleton, LPC. When she is not running around with her husband and four children, you can find her researching and planning her next travel adventure, or curled up reading a good book!
