As an evidence-based treatment, our DBT Skills groups utilize learned skills to help our clients better manage their emotion dysregulation and poor impulse control. As a response to these core problems, clients typically present with self-destructive urges and behaviors, irritability, severe changes in mood, difficulty with transitions, are easily bored, and can have chronic interpersonal problems with friends and family.

DBT skills are taught and learned in the framework of four skill sets. These include:

  • Mindfulness
  • Distress tolerance
  • Emotion regulation
  • Interpersonal effectiveness

Originally developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., DBT is an effective treatment model for personality disorders, eating disorders, and anxiety and mood disorders. The general goal for our clients learning DBT skills is to reduce their emotional vulnerability, regulate their behavioral responses, and enhance their interpersonal relationships.

DBT Skills Group – Adults, High School (in person)

Hosted by

Erika B Carlson

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidenced-based therapy designed to treat people who experience suicidal thinking and behaviors that are disruptive such as maladaptive coping skills and self harm. Our DBT skills group emphasizes Linehan’s four core concepts to help regulate emotions and behaviors: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Along with these and other skills that focus on acceptance and change, group members will learn to tolerate emotional stress that is free of judgment and urges. Group members are required to also attend individual therapy sessions in order to remain in the group.
