As an evidence-based treatment, our DBT Skills groups utilize learned skills to help our clients better manage their emotion dysregulation and poor impulse control. As a response to these core problems, clients typically present with self-destructive urges and behaviors, irritability, severe changes in mood, difficulty with transitions, are easily bored, and can have chronic interpersonal problems with friends and family.
DBT skills are taught and learned in the framework of four skill sets. These include:
- Mindfulness
- Distress tolerance
- Emotion regulation
- Interpersonal effectiveness
Originally developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., DBT is an effective treatment model for personality disorders, eating disorders, and anxiety and mood disorders. The general goal for our clients learning DBT skills is to reduce their emotional vulnerability, regulate their behavioral responses, and enhance their interpersonal relationships.
