Teen girls often ask themselves, where do I belong? How do I fit in?
Social groups in high school are confusing and the pressures of academics and extracurricular activities make it even harder. Girls who struggle with anger, anxiety, depression, and/or have developed a poor set of coping skills find the dynamics even more challenging and need to learn healthy coping skills. This group is designed to help teen girls who have trouble fostering positive peer relationships. The participants will work on making and keeping friends, understanding and fitting into a peer group, and learning about choosing relationships that are not antagonistic.
Group leaders, Karen Chaudhry, LCSW and Janene Pack, LHMC, will utilize cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to help girls understand and name their feelings, examine their own thinking, and enable them to process how their thoughts and feelings are related. The group will talk about each member’s own unique set of challenges in a safe, supportive environment. The group will include a psycho-educational component to look at social challenges common to teen girls and help them to better understand themselves. In addition, the group will end each session by practicing different mindfulness techniques aimed at reducing stress and anxiety.
Karen Chaudhry, LCSW has over 14 years of experience working with children and families. The bulk of her career has been in working with teens. She gained experience first in working with teens in the foster care system and then with teens with an adoption background. Karen specializes in abuse, neglect, and trauma but also has experience working with teens who struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Janene Pack, LMHC has a great deal of experience working with couples, families and teens. In addition to the groups she leads at In Step, Janene also currently works as a counselor at Burke School, a public day school for 13-15 year olds struggling with emotional and mental disabilities. Janene specializes in group therapy, anxiety, depression, stress, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and teen interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships.
