Cathi Cohen, LCSW, CGP – In Step Director
Cathi Cohen, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Group Psychotherapist, has worked with children, adolescents, and adults in a clinical setting since 1984. Early in her career as a social worker, Cathi recognized the power of treating relationship problems through group therapy. It was this interest and expertise that led her to create the Stepping Stones Social Skills Group Therapy Program in 1990. The success of this program led to the formation in 1995 of In Step, a comprehensive mental health practice. Cathi is the author of Raise Your Child’s Social IQ: Stepping Stones to People Skills for Kids, and has become a leading expert in the field of social skills training with children. She has since then completed three more books, Stepping Stones to Building Friendships: A Guide for Camp Counselors, Outnumbered, Not Outsmarted: An A to Z Guide for Working with Kids and Teens in Groups, and her new book Raise Your Parenting IQ – Moving From I’ve Had It to I’ve Got This! In addition to writing numerous articles and conducting regular workshops for parents, educators, and mental health professionals, Cathi has appeared on radio and television programs about the mental health needs of children and their families. Cathi graduated from Tufts University before receiving her M.S. degree from Columbia University School of Social Work.

Dale Bostwick, MA, Ed.S       Extension #23
As a Licensed School Psychologist Dale has a variety of experiences with children ranging in age from 2 to 18 years. Her career in the local public school systems has given her experience conducting psychoeducational assessments, consulting with parents and school staff, and participating as a knowledgeable member of special education committees. Erika Carlson, LCSW  Extension #34
Erika is a licensed clinical social worker who received her Bachelors degree in Psychology from Virginia Tech and her Master’s in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University.  At In Step, Erika supports children, adolescents, and adults through individual, family, and group therapy.  Erika primarily works with adolescents who present with a variety of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, maladaptive behaviors, and typically a history of unsuccessful treatments.  Erika co-leads In Step’s high school Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills group in addition to adhering to the DBT standard model for individual therapy.  Read more

Rachel Cherian, LCSW     Extension #22
Rachel received her M.S. Degree in social work from Columbia University in New York. Prior to returning to graduate school, Rachel worked as a preschool teacher for eight years. She offers sixteen years of experience working with children and families. Rachel is knowledgeable in multicultural issues of assimilation and acculturation.She is experienced in individual, group, and family counseling, and enjoys working with all age groups. Read more

Keith K. Ewell, Ph.D.     Extension #20
Dr. Ewell received his Bachelor of Arts from Loyola University Maryland and his Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Miami in Florida. While in college, Dr. Ewell volunteered, and then later became a substitute teacher at the Children’s Guild, a school for children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral and mental disorders, in Baltimore, Maryland. His time at the Children’s Guild solidified his passion for the field of psychology.Dr. Ewell spent time doing political work at the University of Florida as the Director for an inpatient unit for adolescents with poorly controlled diabetes, which was operated through the Department of Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Kelsey Ferrari, LSP     Extension #28
Kelsey is a Licensed School Psychologist who completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at George Mason University. Kelsey has a Master of Arts in Psychology and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in the area of School Psychology. Kelsey is specially trained in psychoeducational assessments and has experience navigating special education services in the surrounding public-school systems. Her background as a service provider in the public schools has provided her with a wide range of experiences in working with children ages 2 through 21 who have unique social/emotional and behavioral needs. Kimberley Grimes, LCSW     Extension #37
Kimberley Grimes, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Development from Virginia Tech and a Master’s in Social Work and a Master’s in Human and Community Development both from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Kim moved from Baltimore in the fall of 2013 where she had been a licensed clinician working with children, adolescents, and their families. Read more

Shana-Dee Jahrling, MSW and Supervisee in Social Work     Extension #32
Shana joins In Step with two years of experience as a Primary Therapist at the adolescent residential level of care. This residential program delivered intensive short-term treatment to clients transitioning from in-patient to home life. Shana has sixteen years of experience working with adolescents, families/stepfamilies and adults. She incorporates a variety of therapeutic approaches to increase individuals ability to cope, manage and decrease their symptoms. Read more

Salima Jiwa, LCSW         Extension #26
Salima is a licensed clinical social worker who works with individuals and families who desire help and guidance in dealing with life’s challenges. She is passionate about coaching clients to utilize their own well-being and innate wisdom in resolving their struggles. Salima is currently a student of Supercoach Academy 2016, an international transformational coaching program that provides training in the Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought. Constantina N. Kass, Ph.D., NCSP     Extension #35
Dr. Kass is a licensed and nationally certified school psychologist with a broad range of professional and academic experiences with elementary, middle, and high school students.  Arriving in northern Virginia in 2004, she has worked in the Fairfax County Public School system—including assessments, consultation, and as a member of the special education eligibility committee at several schools—and in private practice with students on issues contributing to underachievement and learning difficulties, including anxiety and depression.  Read more

Kelly received her B.A. from Pennsylvania State University and her MA in Education and Human Development from George Washington University. For the past seven years, Kelly has worked as a school counselor for Fairfax County Public Schools. Additionally, Kelly is a licensed professional counselor who provides a wide range of services to youth, families, and children in a variety of settings. Mary Shuffleton, LPC, MA     Extension #29
Mary received her undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts and her Master’s in Counseling Psychology at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. During her graduate training, Mary found her passion while working with children and families. While still in Spokane, she also became certified in school counseling and worked as a therapist in a partnership program between a mental health agency and a school system. Mary’s prior professional experience included working at a brain injury rehabilitation facility where she was encouraged to pursue her graduate degree in counseling. Read more
